YEAH! Launches Monthly Youth Open Mic at Crossroads Cat Cafe
A new creative home for Nashville’s young artists begins August 16, 2026!
YEAH! is proud to announce the YEAH! Youth Open Mic, a monthly performance series uplifting Nashville’s young songwriters, poets, and performers. Beginning August 16, 2026, the event will take place every third Sunday at Crossroads Cat Cafe, offering young people ages 20 and under a welcoming, community‑centered space to share their original work.
Doors open at 10:00 AM, with performances from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Crossroads Cat Cafe, 1603 Buchanan St, Nashville, TN 37208. The event is free to attend and participate, and together YEAH! and Crossroads are preparing youth for leadership, community engagement, and long‑term creative and career pathways - right in the heart of the historically significant neighborhood that is rapidly growing into Nashville’s next cultural hub.
Nashville is known worldwide as “Music City,” yet many young people - especially those from marginalized and low‑income communities - lack access to music education and safe, supportive spaces to perform. Only 56% of MNPS elementary students receive regular music instruction, and just 30% of middle schools offer consistent music education. Youth from low‑income families are five times less likely to have access to arts education than their wealthier peers.
These gaps matter. Students involved in music programs score 22% higher in English and 20% higher in math, are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, and report significantly higher levels of confidence, collaboration skills, and emotional resilience. Meanwhile, Nashville’s youth mental health challenges have risen 35% in the past five years, underscoring the urgent need for creative outlets and community support.
The YEAH! Youth Open Mic directly responds to this need by providing a free, accessible, community‑driven space where young people can express themselves, build confidence, and connect with peers.
The series will be hosted by Kyu, a 12‑year‑old performer whose story reflects the heart of this initiative.
Kyu grew up in Seattle, where she first learned ukulele and eagerly performed at local open mics. After moving to Nashville, she and her mother searched for youth‑friendly performance spaces - only to discover that most open mics were geared toward adults.
When Kyu enrolled in a YEAH! ukulele class at the Nashville Public Library, her mother saw firsthand how YEAH!’s inclusive, youth‑centered approach could fill this gap. She partnered with Crossroads Cat Cafe to bring the Youth Open Mic to life, and Kyu’s enthusiasm, leadership, and lived experience made her the perfect host.
With support from YEAH!, Kyu - and kids like her - gain access to the mentorship, community, and performance opportunities that help young artists grow into confident musicians, creators, and leaders.
